4 Preludes & Fugues 2001

These pieces were an assignment to improve my contrapuntal technique. Each of the four fugues have their own unique character. The first one is based on a syncopated funk-groove. The chromatic scale is used in the second and is written in toccata style. The third fugue has two random pitch and rhythm sets, one for the main theme, the other for the secondary theme; the result has a very chromatic, quasi-improvised character. Finally, the last one started out as a neo-classical type piece, but it did not quite end up that way. The four preludes were written after the fugues were finished, and the ideas are taken directly from their corresponding fugue in some form or another.
